BlizzCon 2026 has made a spectacular return to the Anaheim Convention Center, bringing Blizzard Entertainment’s biggest franchises back into the spotlight after a three-year absence. Held September 12–13, the convention delivered a packed lineup of reveals spanning World of Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Warcraft III.

But among all the announcements, one reveal immediately became the centerpiece of the show: World of Warcraft: Forever, a brand-new third World of Warcraft experience designed to exist alongside both Modern WoW and WoW Classic.

The announcement represents one of Blizzard’s most ambitious attempts yet to revisit the atmosphere of early Azeroth while expanding it with entirely new adventures.

A Long-Awaited BlizzCon Homecoming

For Blizzard fans, BlizzCon 2026 feels like a genuine homecoming.

The event returned with the traditional Opening Ceremony, developer panels, hands-on gameplay, esports competitions, Community Night, the Darkmoon Faire, Blizzard Arcade, merchandise, and cosplay activities. The show floor also offered playable experiences and opportunities for fans to interact with Blizzard developers and fellow members of the community.

The return is particularly significant because BlizzCon had not been held since 2023. Blizzard positioned the 2026 event not simply as another gaming convention, but as a celebration of the communities that have grown around its games for decades.

And the Opening Ceremony delivered exactly the kind of surprises fans had been waiting for.

World of Warcraft: Forever Is the Big Surprise

The biggest Warcraft announcement at BlizzCon 2026 is World of Warcraft: Forever, described by Blizzard as a new, separate World of Warcraft experience that will live alongside the modern game and Classic.

Rather than simply recreating Vanilla WoW, Forever takes the first-year era of Azeroth and asks a different question: what if players could explore that world again, but with new stories, regions, systems, and adventures?

Blizzard says the game will allow players to return to the original era of Azeroth while discovering previously unseen content. The project includes three new zones, more than 1,000 new quests, nine dungeons, two raids, new skills and talents, new class combinations, and the new Skyborne playable race. (EBS Public Now)

Among the new areas are Mount Hyjal, Riverglades, and Zephras Isle, giving veteran players familiar locations alongside completely new places to explore. The game is also designed around the idea that players will remain at level 60, with progression continuing through other systems rather than simply increasing the level cap. (GamesRadar+)

That philosophy could make Forever particularly interesting for long-time WoW players who miss the slower, exploration-focused structure of early Azeroth but want something more substantial than another Classic re-release.

Skyborne: A New Race for Azeroth

One of the most eye-catching additions is Skyborne, a new playable race introduced specifically for World of Warcraft: Forever.

Players who choose the race will begin their adventure through the Zephras Isle starting experience. Blizzard is also offering special Skyborne cosmetic content and other bonuses through its optional upgrade editions.

The introduction of a completely new race into a game inspired by the earliest period of World of Warcraft is an important distinction between Forever and previous Classic experiences.

Instead of simply preserving the past, Blizzard appears to be experimenting with a form of Classic Plus—using the foundations of Vanilla WoW while adding new content that feels like it could have always belonged there.

World of Warcraft: Forever Release Date

Players won’t have to wait until 2027 to experience the new game.

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta begins September 17, 2026, with the beta running through October 21. The full global launch is scheduled for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST.

Importantly, Blizzard says access to Forever will be included with a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, while optional upgrade editions provide additional cosmetic items, early access, and other bonuses.

For players who have spent years asking Blizzard for a more expansive version of Classic WoW, November could become one of the biggest moments in the game’s modern history.

Diablo V Officially Announced

Blizzard also delivered a major surprise for Diablo fans: Diablo V is officially in development.

The next mainline entry will take players to a version of Sanctuary where Diablo has already won. Instead of beginning with heroes attempting to prevent catastrophe, the game explores a world that has already fallen and asks how humanity can survive after the ultimate defeat.

Diablo V is targeting a spring 2029 release window in North America, meaning the project is still several years away.

Blizzard also announced a new Diablo animated series in development with Netflix, expanding the franchise beyond games and into television storytelling.

StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter

Perhaps the most unexpected announcement outside Warcraft was the return of StarCraft.

Blizzard revealed an original open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe, marking a dramatic departure from the franchise’s traditional real-time strategy format.

The project is targeting a spring 2030 release, making it one of Blizzard’s most distant announced projects. While details remain limited, the announcement alone is significant: after years without a major new StarCraft release, Blizzard is once again building a new experience around the universe of the Terran, Zerg, and Protoss.

For fans who have been waiting for the StarCraft universe to return, this could represent the beginning of an entirely new era.

Overwatch, Hearthstone and Warcraft III Also Get Big Updates

BlizzCon 2026 wasn’t only about future projects.

Overwatch is celebrating its 10th anniversary, with Blizzard revealing new content including the Doctrine Support hero, a vampire-inspired character equipped with bat-like drones. The game is also receiving major changes to Sombra and Roadhog alongside the new Watchpoint: Grimsvötn map.

Meanwhile, Hearthstone is introducing a redesigned Journal system that connects quests, achievements, events, and expansion stories into a more cohesive historical record.

Warcraft fans also received an unexpected gift: Warcraft III: Reforged – Forsaken Kingdom, the franchise’s first new story campaign in more than two decades. The campaign explores the fall of Lordaeron, the rise of the Forsaken, and the origins of the Undercity. Blizzard made the campaign available alongside the event.

Heroes of the Storm also received a surprise injection of attention with Xal’atath joining the Nexus as a new hero on September 28, with PTR access beginning September 14.

A New Era for Blizzard?

What makes BlizzCon 2026 especially interesting is how broad Blizzard’s strategy now appears to be.

Instead of relying exclusively on established live-service games, Blizzard is simultaneously looking toward the future while revisiting its history.

World of Warcraft: Forever looks backward to the earliest days of Azeroth but adds hundreds of hours of new content. Warcraft III: Reforged is receiving a new campaign after more than 20 years. StarCraft is being reinvented as an open-world shooter. And Diablo V represents the next major chapter for one of Blizzard’s most important franchises.

The announcements suggest a company attempting to reconnect with its legacy while experimenting with new formats and new ways for players to experience familiar universes.

For fans, that may be the most exciting takeaway from BlizzCon’s return.

The Road Ahead

BlizzCon 2026 has already established itself as one of Blizzard’s most important showcases in years. The announcements are not limited to one franchise or one type of player—they cover MMORPGs, action RPGs, shooters, strategy games, esports, animation, and community-driven experiences.

But World of Warcraft: Forever arguably represents the event’s most intriguing experiment.

It isn’t simply World of Warcraft Classic. It isn’t Modern WoW. Instead, Blizzard is creating a third path through Azeroth—one that preserves the identity of the original game while giving developers room to tell stories and build adventures that never existed in 2004.

With the beta beginning September 17 and the full release arriving November 4, 2026, the next few months will reveal whether Forever can capture the magic of classic Azeroth while giving veteran players something genuinely new.

If Blizzard can pull that balance off, World of Warcraft: Forever could become much more than another Classic experience—it could become the next major chapter in the history of Azeroth.
